Moreton Hall is looking to recruit a well-qualified, enthusiastic and thoughtful Geography Teacher to lead this vibrant, outward-looking department. Geography is a well-established and popular subject at Moreton Hall. It is compulsory for all pupils from Year 7 to Year 9, and a large proportion continue to GCSE level and subsequently, in significant numbers to A Level. The department has a long track record of success, with an encouraging proportion of pupils going on to study Geography and other closely related disciplines at Russell Group universities. The department is academically ambitious, and enthusiastically engaged in broadening the pupils’ horizons. The successful candidate must be confident in supporting pupils to achieve grades at and beyond their expectations. They will also be expected to lead the department in building on the pupils’ enthusiasm for the subject within the curriculum. They will also contribute to the enrichment activities offered as part of our extracurricular programme. Fieldwork and skills are integral to the department.

Job Outline and Responsibilities

The candidate will:

  • Oversee this lively and engaged department, including liaising with the Prep School.
  • Manage other Geography teachers to foster a positive and stimulating environment within the department and to deploy staff talents and specialisms best.
  • Offer pupils the broadest understanding of Geography, embracing inclusivity, diversity and global cultures.
  • Regularly review curriculum content to ensure that Geography continues reflecting and illuminating current concerns.
  • Teach A Level, GCSE and KS3 Geography as part of the teaching team.
  • Oversee extracurricular activities, including contributing to the activities programme and wider fieldwork opportunities.


Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Teaching qualification and teaching experience of at least three years. An excellent academic record at degree level and/or beyond.

Experience

  • Experience teaching Geography, ideally from Year 7 to A Level, especially IGCSE and I A Level.
  • A record of success in public examinations.
  • Experience in leading a team and managing a department is desirable but optional.

Located in the town of Oswestry, Shropshire, Moreton Hall is an all-through school with a Sixth Form for pupils between the ages of 3 and 18. The school was founded in 1913 in an Elizabethan manor house. Boys are accepted up to Year 8. 

Values and vision

Moreton Hall aims to provide a high standard of education by following a tailored curriculum. It offers a nurturing environment that allows girls to grow and excel, personally and academically. Pupils are able to take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities on the school grounds. The principal believes the aim of the school is to “stretch the most able and support the least confident”. Teachers are there to inform and guide students to be lifelong learners.
