Job description

Abbey College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.

 Purpose of the Job:

The Inclusion Lead role is designed to support some of our more vulnerable students to access a broad and balanced curriculum, when they have previously faced challenges within a mainstream setting.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the New Horizons facility. You will be offer bespoke pastoral care and work with students, staff and parents to raise aspirations and attendance.

You will also support all students accessing an Alternative Provision working with students, staff and parents to raise aspirations and attendance.

Main Duties /Responsibilities

  • To be the Inclusion Lead of the New Horizons curriculum at Abbey College
  • To promote and develop a positive learning environment in New Horizons by helping students overcome barriers to learning and by promoting engagement
  • To lead on pastoral care, careers and general support; supporting students to secure work experience placements alongside time in New Horizons
  • To support teaching and support staff who are delivering lessons or activities to the students accessing New Horizons or via an alternative provision.
  • Small group teaching.
  • Supporting the pastoral needs of the students, and strengthening the link between staff, parents and carers and the students.
  • To follow our internal New Horizons behaviour policy and issue sanctions and rewards as necessary.
  • To be flexible!
  • To escort students around the school site as necessary.
  • To monitor attendance and follow our safeguarding checks in the case of student absence as necessary.
  • To work with our dedicated careers team and support students in accessing advice and support for their next steps.
  • To support teaching staff in differentiating and delivering lessons as appropriate.
  • To motivate and reward students and recognise and celebrate success.
  • To contribute to annual reviews for students with EHCPs, PEPs, PSPs, IAEPs as necessary.
  • To attend & where required lead meetings: PSP meetings, IAEP meetings, meetings with external agencies or any other meetings necessary to support the students attending New Horizons or an Alternative Provision.
  • To provide support with events such as fundraising in the community alongside the students.
  • To ensure all student reports are completed as needed.
  • To liaise with other key departments/ Heads of Department to support the students as needed liaise with other key students as needed.
  • To line manage New Horizons staff.

Other responsibilities

  • To support the furtherance of the school’s mission statement
  • To promote student engagement
  • To support senior staff in quality assurance procedures
  • To share responsibility with others for the environment in New Horizons
  • To support colleagues in sustaining outstanding behaviour and attitudes to learning amongst students
  • To provide cover for other colleagues, as required.
  • Be humble, intuitive and passionate
  • Highly motivated and enthusiastic
  • An understanding of health and safety issues
  • An understanding of the values and behaviour expected within this role
  • An understanding of the protection and safeguarding of children and young people
  • Flexible with working hours if needed

Safeguarding:

  • The Inclusion Lead will have:
  • The ability to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people
  • Appreciation of the significance of safeguarding and ability to interpret this accurately for all individual children and young people whatever their life circumstances
  • A good understanding of the safeguarding agenda and an ability to contribute towards a safe environment


The duties and responsibilities of the subject element of the post may vary from time to time according to the changing needs of the school. Any section of the job description may be reviewed at the discretion of the Headteacher in the light of those changing requirements and in consultation with the post holder and governing body.

Wellbeing

  •  Ensure all pupils have equal access to learning using appropriate strategies and resources, where necessary.
  • Liaise with pastoral staff members to ensure the wellbeing of pupils and their full participation in school life.
  • Raise any concerns regarding pupils’ behaviour with the relevant Raising Standards Lead.
  • Implement any specific arrangements for individual pupils, ensuring that relevant staff members are aware of the measures in place.
  • Provide individual pastoral support to pupils, where necessary.
  • Continuously motivate and challenge pupils, whilst promoting and reinforcing self-esteem.

 Safeguarding

  •  To have the ability to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people.
  • Appreciate the significance of safeguarding and interprets this accurately for all individual children and young people whatever their life circumstances.
  • To have a good understanding of the safeguarding agenda and can demonstrate an ability to contribute towards a safe environment.
  • The ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice and information in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.

 Variation Clause

  • This job description will be reviewed and updated periodically in order to ensure that it relates to the job performed or to incorporate any proposed changes. This procedure will be conducted by the Headteacher or line manager in consultation with the post-holder. In these circumstances it will be the aim to reach agreement on reasonable changes but if agreement is not possible management reserves the right to make changes to the job description following consultation.

 Abbey College, Ramsey is located in a small market town, almost half way between Huntingdon and Peterborough and within easy reach of Cambridge and London. The College is set within extensive, historic and beautiful grounds close to the Parish Church of St Thomas A Becket.    The College is a large 11-18 school with a catchment which extends over a wide rural area. 

There are approximately 1090 students on role, including a sixth form of 120. We currently have around 70 members of teaching staff with an additional support team of over 75 members of staff.   

We have high aspirations as a College as our 2016 results showed. Our A level and BTEC results placed us the sixth best in Cambridgeshire, outdoing many private schools, and our GCSE results were our highest ever, with a progress 8 figure of 0.21. We are also oversubscribed for the second year in a row this year by over 40% and our attendance is 2% higher than the national averages.
