Job overview

Oak House School has a school population of 1100+ students. The successful candidate should be able to cater for English as an additional language as many of our students speak English as a second or third language. Furthermore, the successful candidate must be open and willing to undertake professional training and have a reflective attitude, striving for excellence in all aspects of their practice. 


The role:

  • The successful candidate would be teaching Drama throughout the Secondary School up to and including IB DP Theatre.
  •  Drama has been established in the school as an obligatory subject area on the curriculum from Year 4 with a commitment to creating a supportive, caring environment where students can develop with confidence as theatre makers and performers. 
  • In KS3 & KS4 we follow the British curriculum, while assessing students within the Spanish framework. In Years 8 /9 drama is taught on a carousel system within the Arts Department (Music, Art and Drama). Students can then go on to take one of the Arts subjects at GCSE level (EDEXCEL) where the successful candidate would be expected to set and mark coursework and practical examination work and prepare students for external written exams. 

At KS5 students can choose to take the IB DP or the Spanish National Baccalaureate. At IB DP level we currently offer Theatre in Group 6 and each year have had a group of students take up the challenge. 


The opportunity for a subject leader role within the arts department is possible for the right candidate where the aim would be to continue to develop a dynamic faculty ensuring the progression of every student’s arts education and promote the arts in the school and the wider educational community.


The subject area enjoys a fully equipped teaching space with stage lighting, projector, and a very well-resourced subject specific library. We also have use of an auditorium for more formal performances. 


Qualifications and experience

Essential:

  • Bachelor of Arts. Drama
  • PGCE
  • A high or near native level of English
  • Minimum 4 years’ experience working as a Drama Teacher in KS3 and KS4
  • Ability to sequence and plan schemes of work for new curriculums, while adapting to the needs of the students, including ALN and EAL needs.
  • Committed to open dialogue with colleagues, pupils, and parents.
  • A willingness to reflect upon best practices.


Desirable:

  • Experience with GCSE Drama, preferably EDEXCEL
  • Experience with the IBDP programme, especially Theatre.
  • An interest in developing links with other schools and promoting participation in Theatre events beyond the school.
  • International teaching experience.
  • A willingness to learn Spanish.

Contract and benefits: 

  • Full time, permanent contract, with a four-month trial period
  • Social Security paid, ensuring state medical cover
  • 190 working days per annum
  • Christmas holidays: 2 weeks
  • Easter holidays: 10 days
  • Summer Holidays: 30th June – until the end of August
  • Local, national or school’s free choice holidays: 12 days total
  • Lunches provided free of charge
  • Moving expenses of 1,000 euros gross, paid at the end of September (overseas candidates)
  • Travel expenses up to a maximum of 250 euros - receipts required (overseas candidates)
  • Assistance given (if required), with finding accommodation, registering with a doctor, official paperwork, opening a bank account

Salary:

  • Competitive salary.

About the school

Oak House School is a private, co-educational school, situated in Sarrià, in the north of Barcelona. It was founded in 1968.

The school is a Non-Profit Foundation with a Board of Governors. The Board is comprised of seven parents, elected through the Parents’ Association.

We currently have 1108 pupils on roll, aged between 3 and 18 years.

In Early Years and Primary, Oak House School is fully authorised as a British School in Spain. The authorisation is awarded by the British Council, following a rigorous inspection by British inspectors.  The school is a member of the National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS).

The Oak House Secondary department complies fully with the requirements of the Catalan education system and is an authorised International Baccalaureate World School, offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme to our 16 to 18 year old pupils.

Our Secondary pupils are also prepared for Cambridge International Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exams in a range of subjects and Cambridge English Language exams from First Certificate to Proficiency level.

The high quality of teaching, the individual attention afforded to each pupil and the wide range of resources provided are factors which define Oak House School. Our pupils and families are involved in a variety of fundraising initiatives throughout the year. Secondary pupils also take part in community service projects.

Pupil support

We support each individual pupil in a number of ways. The essential support is provided by the class tutor and the teaching staff. The class tutor monitors each  pupil’s  academic  progress and deals with any personal or social issues which may arise. The tutor provides the main link between the home and school and ensures that parents are well informed about their son/daughter’s academic progress  and  emotional  well-being  in school.

Technology

Technology is used at Oak House School to support and enhance learning whenever appropriate. We teach our pupils the skills that they will need in an ever-developing technological world. However, we also recognise that teachers and parents play essential roles in ensuring that students are not over-dependent on technology, in either their learning or their social interactions.

Classrooms and laboratories are well equipped to take advantage of the latest technologies and to allow all pupils individual access to a variety of devices.

Dining service

All food is prepared on the school premises and our menus are carefully monitored by a nutritionist. A vegetarian menu is offered and special dietary requirements are catered for.
