Job overview

Welcome to Shoreham Academy – a unique, successful, and dynamic school at the heart of the communities of Shoreham and Southwick. The moment you walk through the door at Shoreham Academy you can feel the buzz, energy and excitement of an inclusive school that focuses on the enrichment, enhancement and learning of all children.

We are an 11-18, non-selective academy where everyone – staff and students alike – strive to be the best they can be. We see each child as an individual and seek to give them an education which best suits their abilities and interests. As adults we also see ourselves as a work in progress and invest heavily in our own professional development to remain challenged by what we do and inspirational in what we can give. We seek to employ enthusiastic, dynamic, and inspiring staff to join us in working creatively with our young people and enabling them all to achieve great things.

We focus on nurturing the whole child; our broad and balanced curriculum is complemented by a wide-ranging and exciting programme of extracurricular activities. There is something for every child at Shoreham Academy – whatever their interests, whatever their abilities. All students participate in the Shoreham Academy Experience with the expectation of fulfilling a number of ‘pledges’ in preparation for adult life.

Shoreham Academy is part of United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life-changing education to children and young people across England. United Learning is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All positions are subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring check from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and shortlisted candidates will be subject to an online check.

We always appoint on merit, and we are open to discussing flexible working options.

Shoreham Academy is looking for a Lead Cover Supervisor (term time only) to organise the cover of classes for the day, deploying other cover staff, external cover staff and teaching staff as required to ensure lessons are covered effectively when teaching staff are absent.

The main purpose of the job is to monitor the staff absence line and, after checking pre-arranged cover requirements, create a schedule of cover for the day for classes and any enrichment activities after school. The role requires you to liaise with external agencies as directed by your line manager or Business Director and arrange for short-term or longer-term external cover staff, if required.

The successful candidate will be able to provide effective cover supervision to students within the classroom, using the absent teacher’s cover work, which will enable students to continue their learning in the absence of teaching staff.

The Lead Cover Supervisor will at times be required to provide office and Student Services support. This could include, managing telephone calls, handling messages and entering incident reports.

This is an exciting and varied role, often seen as gateway position for moving into other support staff and teaching roles. It would also suit current cover supervisors who are looking to progress their career in education.

About you:

We are looking for a suitably experienced, enthusiastic, driven, hardworking individual who is able to use their own initiative and can relate to and establish an excellent rapport with students.

You will have the ambition and vision to secure the very best outcomes for all students.  If, having read the person specification you are confident that you fulfil our requirements for this position, this could be the perfect opportunity for you, and we look forward to receiving your application. Shoreham Academy aspires to being a ‘Great School’ so we need great people to be able to achieve this.

Staff Benefits:

  • Free use of the Academy’s fitness suite
  • Generous LGPS employer contribution pension scheme
  • Free on-site parking and easy access to local public transport
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Extensive CPD and development offer
  • Possibility of Teacher Training pathways for right candidates
  • School Holidays
  • Sick Pay
  • Strong behaviour systems in school to support all staff
  • Staff Wellbeing systems and support
  • Opportunity to boost salary with paid break and lunch duties

The successful candidate would receive a high level of support to be successful and enjoy the role.

All new employees will be required to undertake an Enhanced DBS check with Barred List information prior to working in school.  Two satisfactory references are required from all successful applicants, one of which must be the current or most recent employer. Prohibition order checks are undertaken for all newly appointed teachers and support staff who will be engaged in ‘teaching work’.

All new employees will be required to complete a medical questionnaire.

United Learning reserve the right to request further checks for individuals that have ever lived or worked outside the UK.  It is an individual’s obligation to meet these requirements by requesting a Certificate of Good Conduct from that country, or those countries, of residence and (for teachers) a Letter of Professional Standing from the professional regulating authority in the country or those countries in which they worked.

All new employees will be required to read and sign the annual Staff Student Relationship letter upon joining the Academy.

All new employees are required to complete three online safeguarding modules prior to starting work.

Evidence of an individual’s right to work in the UK will be checked at interview.  Verification of any mandatory professional qualifications and professional status; relevant certificates or a letter of confirmation from the awarding institution must be provided at interview.
