Job overview

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and committed Learning Support Assistant to join our successful SEND team and thriving school. The role entails working with students with a range of special educational needs, supporting them in classroom settings and, at times, in small groups in our dedicated learning support department. The Bulmershe SEND department has its own base with fantastic facilities which offer a superb environment in which to work and learn. We are a friendly and supportive team of 15 staff who have a wealth of experience. In an ever-changing world, we continue to learn and adapt in order to best support our student community.

To provide in-lesson support for those students identified by the SENDCo/Deputy SENDCo. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Providing in-class support, with a focus on students with an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP), both SEMH and/or academic in nature
  • Helping neurodivergent students acquire the skills to become independent, both in their approach to their work but also school in general
  • Working with individuals or small groups of students as directed by the classroom teacher to focus on key aspects of the work being studied
  • Reading with students on a 1:1 basis during English lessons and students' directed reading time
  • Supporting students in mock exams with their access arrangements
  • Taking part in appropriate and on-going CPD
  • Supporting students with re-integration back into lessons, particularly those with SEMH needs
  • Assisting students with making the transition to/from the Bulmershe School
  • Establishing excellent relationships with staff and parents to support students beyond the classroom
  • Most importantly, approaching this role with a student-centred approach and ensuring that student voice is at the heart of everything we do

The Bulmershe School is a heavily oversubscribed school which sits at the heart of the Woodley community. We are a mixed, Corvus Learning Trust Academy school of 1,500 students aged between 11 and 18, who come from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

The community school was established in 1964 and at present, has around 1,500 students on the roll with 250 pupils enrolled in our growing sixth form.

Teaching is good and sometimes outstanding. Lessons are well planned and paced so that students are engaged in their learning. Students’ behaviour, both in lessons and around the school, is very good. Students’ very positive attitudes to learning contribute to their good progress in lessons. The school is a harmonious community with good relationships between students and staff. Students feel very safe and the school promotes their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development well.”
