Job overview
The School of Access to Higher Education within The City of Liverpool College delivers a wide range of Access to H.E. courses across a range of curriculum areas. We are seeking someone who can teach Level 3 Business to Access to Higher Education students and who has the necessary attributes to engage students who have previously been resistant to education. Our cohort is a made up of adult learners aged 19+, from a diverse range of social, economic, and cultural backgrounds. You will be required to plan and deliver engaging and innovative lessons, monitor each student’s academic performance and provide feedback for improvements. You will also supervise and motivate students to achieve their academic and personal goals.
You will join an established team who have many years’ experience providing a successful Access to Higher Education provision to our students. We have built strong links with local, regional, and national Higher Education Institutions, and our students benefit from this. You will work alongside a motivated team of lecturers to enthuse students by making the subject content relevant and current with a strong link to employers and the local economy.
Key Responsibilities
- Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:
- To contribute fully to the mission and values statement of the College ensuring its effective implementation in all aspects of College life.
- To contribute to the College and curriculum area strategic objectives and to actively engage in the annual review.
- To be aware of national developments in subject area and update knowledge and skills on an annual basis.
- To plan, prepare and deliver high quality lessons to achieve effective management of the learning process.
- Plan and use a range of effective and appropriate teaching and learning techniques to engage and motivate students and encourage independence and student autonomy.
- Establish a purposeful and motivating learning environment where students feel safe, secure, confident and valued.
- Establish and maintain procedures with students which promote and maintain appropriate behaviour, communication and respect for others, while challenging discriminatory behaviour and attitudes.
- To set, mark and record work in accordance with College and School Assessment policies.
- To track all students’ progress and attendance in accordance with agreed College systems and policies
- To provide a balance of appropriate teaching styles and learning experiences.
- To be aware of external/internal assessment procedures and to play and appropriate part in their implementation.
- Evaluate and improve own communication skills to maximise effective communication and overcome barriers.
- To liaise with Head of School in contributing to the design of programmes and teaching approaches which will enable curriculum areas to achieve high standards and outstanding levels of achievement.
- To liaise with the Head of School curriculum teams in contributing to the administration necessary to support the teaching, learning and assessment within the subject area.
- To work with colleagues with relevant expertise to identify and address additional Digital, English and Maths skills for development within the subject area.
- To review own professional development needs and to participate fully in future training and development.
- To engage with prospective students at Welcome Evenings, events, and open evenings.
- To ensure that all students in the subject area comply with College’s policies and procedures.
- To provide enrichment opportunities that are exciting, motivating and enhance the student experience.
- To ensure learners are supported with a well prepared VLE and resources for independent study.
- A knowledge and appreciation of the different needs of learners and effective strategies to ensure all learners make progress.
Generic duties:
- To contribute fully to the mission and values statement of the College Group ensuring its effective implementation in all aspects of College life.
- To take proactive responsibility for Health & Safety to ensure that a safe working environment and safe working practices are maintained at all times.
- To comply with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).
- To support cross college activities as required, such as organizing events or assisting with enrolment.
- To understand roles and responsibilities around safeguarding all learners and contribute to maintaining a safe learning environment.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
Essential criteria:
- Educated to Level 4 e.g. Degree or equivalent in Business or related degree
- Successful recent previous teaching experience within Business or related – this could have come within a teaching placement if applicant is an ECT.
- Excellent computer literacy – ability to use the current IT programs of the College.
- Proven relevant experience of curriculum planning, development & delivery in Business.
- Knowledge and understanding gained from previous experience in delivering the Lv3 Business Studies.
- Engaged and passionate about Continuing Professional Development.
- Minimum of Level 2 Literacy/Numeracy.
- High level of communication and interpersonal skills, an effective member of a team.
- Ability to set high standards for students, colleagues and for themselves.
- Strong understanding of the importance and impact of feedback on learner performance.
- Experience using ICT to support and enhance subject delivery.
- Outstanding teacher who is student centred.
- Desirable criteria:
- A recognised Teaching qualification
- Experience and understanding of Access to H.E
- Good understanding of curriculum development to meet the training needs of employers.
- Experience with Access to H.E internal and external moderation.
- Fluent speaking in any of the mentioned languages: Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Kurdish Sorani, Tigrinya, Spanish, French or Portuguese

Opened in 1992 after being formed from a number of colleges in the city we now have 5 locations situated in the heart of Liverpool. Currently the college serves more than a third of all 16-18 year olds in Liverpool, and educates almost 12,000 learners a year. In 2018 the college achieved a pass rate of 99.6% beating the national average of 97.6% for a-level results. Within this year as well we had a 100% pass rate in modern languages.
However, the college itself is not just facts and figures. The mission statement of provide high quality skills and education by delivering opportunities for growth to all people and business of the Liverpool City region, shows inclusivity and a community understanding. The ease in which to get here helps quite a lot to. Be it driving, buses, trains or even a ferry you are never short of options.

Historical buildings like the Bombed out church, Royal court theatre house or even a hidden gem like the Bluecoat School lane which boasts being the oldest building in Liverpool. The Beatles museum is a popular place to explore the band and possible find bits out about them you might not have known.
