St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School is seeking to appoint an outstanding Maths Mentor as soon as possible.  

St Thomas Aquinas is a large and thriving Catholic comprehensive school in the south of Birmingham. Along with eight local primary schools, it is part of growing Catholic Multi Academy. It is a place where staff and students from all faiths live out the school mission. Examination results in summer 2024 were outstanding (significantly well above national averages) and in the top group of schools nationally. Building on the ‘Good’ judgement by OFSTED, the Catholic Schools Inspectorate recently judged the school to be ‘Outstanding’ in all areas. As a result, we are an oversubscribed school and becoming more and more popular with families with waiting lists in every year group.

The Maths faculty is an undoubted strength of the school, achieving excellent outcomes for the last 3 years.

This role will involve:

-         small group extraction work and in-class support at key stage 3 & 4

-         some intensive 1:1 work to plug learning gaps in year 11

-         teaching a GCSE Resit class in the sixth form with the support of the Maths Faculty.


The successful candidate will have:

  • previous experience working with children in an educational setting
  • passion for teaching Maths
  • some recent knowledge of the GCSE specification 
  • an enthusiasm for helping students succeed


The role could suit a retired or former teacher wishing to return to the profession or a recent graduate interested in pursuing a career in teaching who would like to gain experience of the education sector. We would also welcome applications from classroom-based support staff with excellent mathematical skills, an understanding of the needs of our children, and a gift for teaching.  Hours can be negotiated for an outstanding candidate.


This is a wonderful opportunity for the right candidate to work closely with another mentor amongst a team of strong teachers in the Maths faculty. They will be able to work flexibly whilst making a huge difference to lives of young people.

St Thomas Aquinas is a large and thriving Catholic comprehensive school situated in the town of Kings Norton, in the south of Birmingham. Along with seven local primary schools, it is part of Lumen Christi MAC, a growing Catholic Multi Academy. The secondary school with a sixth form educates girls and boys aged between 11 and 18. There are approximately 1,160+ pupils on roll with around 160 students in the Sixth Form.
