Job overview

Astrea Academy Trust is looking for an experienced senior leader to become the new Principal of Netherwood Academy, an 11- 16 academy in Barnsley. The school has been on an impressive journey of improvement and as the current Headteacher retires, Netherwood Academy is now primed for its next leader. This a truly fantastic opportunity to lead this vibrant, Ofsted rated Good school, as it takes the next critical steps towards excellence.

Astrea Academy Trust is committed to never settling for second best, and our aim is that every child in our 26 academies across South Yorkshire and Cambridgeshire gets a brilliant education, removing any barriers to achieving this. We are committed to a scholarly culture, a knowledge-rich curriculum, and a traditional approach to teaching and behaviour, where children can learn, thrive and go on to lead successful lives.

Whether you are an existing, successful Headteacher or an outstanding, tenacious Deputy Headteacher, leading Netherwood Academy into the future will be a career-defining move. The academy requires an aspirational and dynamic leader, with a strong inner core, an unwavering commitment to all children achieving their very best, and a talent for bringing staff, students and the community together in a shared vision. You will have a flair for motivating others, embedding strong cultures of academic success, and commanding respect from staff and pupils alike. As Principal, you will have the opportunity to lead the school to become a beacon of excellence in the area, ensuring pupils have an exceptional educational offer and the very best opportunities that they deserve.

To support you to achieve this, you will have access to the support and resources of Astrea Academy Trust. This includes the expertise of a Regional Director, as well as a highly effective team of national subject leads and Central Support for Finance, HR, Estates and other functions.

If you are aligned to our mission and values, have an excellent track record of school leadership and a drive to do more, we would love to hear from you. To arrange a confidential and informal discussion about the role, please contact our recruitment partners Propelo on 01273 222 877 or email astrea@propelo.co.uk. Netherwood is an 11-16 secondary academy located in Wombwell, a short distance from both the A1 and M1, and set in extensive, modern grounds.

At Netherwood, we are looking for people to join an academy which has improved rapidly over the past 5 years, culminating in an Ofsted overall effectiveness grade of Good.

This has been the result of significant changes in terms of curriculum development, teaching and learning, personal development and behavioural culture.

Colleagues who choose to join our ranks will be clear about what they can bring to the academy – a high level of professional and academic knowledge, a willingness to subscribe to our ways of working, a commitment to hard work and collaboration and a sense of moral justice.

Netherwood’s future success is underpinned by a strong set of shared values which support the vision, shape the culture, and make a statement about what we hold dear:

Scholarship - We will be informed by the best of academic and organisational thinking and research, using this where we can and expanding it where possible.

Curiosity - We will ask searching questions, not take things on face value, seek out the best of what is known and engage in appreciative enquiry.

Tenacity - We will deliver on our promises and see things through to completion. We will embody pace, urgency and determination in our focus on improving outcomes for children and on our own performance; we will learn to bounce back from disappointment and make sure we are fully committed to getting it right next time, for ourselves and for the students

Respect – We expect to treat each other with respect, in all forms of communication and interaction, and we expect everyone to embrace and celebrate difference; we also expect respect of the academy and community environment

Responsibility – we accept responsibility and commit to ensuring we do not place barriers in the way of students achieving the very best outcomes they can, irrespective of their back-story; we expect students to also accept responsibility for their actions

We are committed to creating an environment where exemplary behaviour is at the heart of productive learning. We believe in high aspiration, high motivation and high achievement for all. In order to achieve this, we provide a clear behaviour policy, which ensures students and staff are supported to achieve the high standards we have set.

Fundamental to the values of the Trust is a core entitlement to a knowledge-rich curriculum; in order to achieve this, our students must have access to disruption-free learning and our teachers must be free to do what they do best. We focus heavily on deliberate practice, ensuring staff and students get ample opportunity to hone their skills and routines, and much of our CPD time is devoted to developing and embedding intellectual practice, based on the best research available to us.

We look forward to hearing from you.
