Job overview

Rossall School is among the most successful and prestigious independent boarding and day schools in the North West with flourishing pupil numbers.

With an enticing and highly aspirational culture, Rossall School is offering opportunities for exceptional educators to come and work with supremely talented, inspiring and compassionate professionals to teach our hard working, ambitious and delightful pupils.

The Sports & PE Department are seeking an additional active and interested graduate or university student in their placement year to join the department. We are a school that has a very strong sporting offering for both boys and girls; we compete at national level in multiple sports.

Our facilities are first class and on average all students receive around 3 hours of sport a week with those who are more committed averaging in excess of 5 hours. Although we have over 15 different sports on offer we would say that Football, Hockey, Netball, Cricket and Athletics are our focus sports and we would be looking for a candidate to offer to a high level in one of these as a minimum as well as a willingness to get involved in other sports.

The successful candidate will play a significant role in the coaching of sport and the wider operational running of the department. Not only will you be involved in the focus sports of each term but you will also offer support in PE lessons and assist our Head of Athletic Development with the conditioning of many students; your work will take you across both the senior and junior school provision. We envisage that you will work directly with a team in each term both during the week and on a weekend in formal fixtures against other schools and inject energy and enthusiasm into the whole school sports programme.

Throughout your placement you will be seen as a full member of the PE staff and will be invited on various trips / tours throughout the year as necessary as well as working closely with the boarding house staff.

Main responsibilities

  • To work closely with the Director of Sport, Head of Academic P.E. and the heads of individual sports to ensure personal development.
  • To help with leading coaching sessions at games practices under instruction of the Director of Sport;
  • To Manage/assist a school team, including attending matches which will include Saturday fixtures;
  • To help with Junior and Senior P.E. lessons under the direction of Head of Academic P.E.;
  • Potential to help with the Elite Player Programme and sports science support;
  • Refereeing or umpiring across a range of sport, depending on experience;
  • P.E. Department administration (assisting with transport and organisation of fixtures);
  • To be open to be a house tutor (1 evening per week, supervising prep and take a tutor group);
  • Providing evening supervision in the sports centre between two & three nights a week so that boarders and external sports clubs can use the facilities
  • Accompanying school trips and expeditions;
  • To undertake other duties as requested by the Head from time to time.
