Location: Huish Episcopi Academy 

Contract: Fixed Term (Maternity Cover)

Working Hours: 30 hours per week (8am – 4pm)

Contracted Weeks: Full Year Term Time plus 1 week

Salary: Actual Salary £23,432.49 (FTE £33,945.00)

Reporting to: Assistant Principal – Safeguarding & Attendance

Direct Reports: Medical Officers, Counsellors


The Role:

As a pivotal part of the pastoral care team, the Student Health & Welfare Officer will lead efforts in ensuring students' physical and emotional well-being. You will work closely with students, parents, and staff to support student health, manage medical conditions, and promote a positive school environment. Key responsibilities include developing health care plans, administering first aid, supporting mental health initiatives, and liaising with external health professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead practitioner for students with medical conditions, creating and reviewing Individual Health Care Plans.
  • Administer medicines and first aid, including coordinating emergency medical care.
  • Manage the school’s medical supplies and ensure training is provided to staff as required.
  • Support mental health initiatives, acting as the school’s mental health first aider.
  • Line manage Medical Officers and Counsellors to ensure high standards of care and support.
  • Organise staff training in first aid and health-related matters, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Liaise with external agencies such as CAMHS and MHST to ensure comprehensive support for students.
  • Lead the school’s immunisation programme and act as a link with the school nurse team.

What We’re Looking For:

  • GCSE English and Maths (grade C/4 or higher) and a Post 16 qualification in a related subject.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
  • Experience working with young people, ideally in an educational setting.
  • First aid knowledge and experience managing medical procedures.
  • Passionate about student welfare and committed to promoting a positive, inclusive culture within the school.

Huish Episcopi Academy is a large, non-selective, mixed secondary school for pupils aged 11-18 based in the heat of the Somerset Levels with a large catchment area.
