Job overview

Terrington Hall are seeking to engage a teaching assistant to support a bright and engaging Year 4 child 1:1 from 1st September 2024. The role will be very varied and interesting. It is ideally suited for a TA with SEND experience or a Level 2/3 TA qualification.

We are looking for somebody to nurture and challenge the child, to help manage their academic focus and ensure participation in classroom activities. The ideal candidate will have experience and an understanding of appropriate SEND support including motivation, regulation and positive relationship-led support. We are seeking someone with a clear sense of values and expectations, confidence, ambition and a willingness to take part in the day-to-day life of a busy Prep school.

The key undertakings will be:

-         to ensure the classroom tasks are effectively and appropriately differentiated and ambitious in their outcomes

-         to help to break down the learning into smaller chunks with plenty of opportunities for revisiting and over learning, where appropriate. This might involve smaller challenging follow-up tasks

-         the pupil is very bright so it is not the academics they need support with, but how to follow instructions, keep on task, take on movement breaks and to know when to allow them to get on independently

-         although this role is to support a pupil on a 1:1 basis the applicant must be willing to be flexible and, in some aspects, work with other groups of pupils within the form group

The role will also involve giving positive encouragement, feedback and praise to reinforce and sustain the pupil’s efforts and develop self-reliance and self-esteem. After training from the SENCo, the successful applicant will be required to carry out physiotherapy exercises at least 3 times a week.

The successful applicant will also support the pupil in developing social skills/interactions both in and out of the classroom and will give additional support during playground/lunch time supervision.

This position is for 5 mornings a week (08:30-12:30) (some flexibility). Working closely with, alongside and in partnership with the child's class teacher, parents and specialist subject teachers.

This is a consultancy arrangement, paid at £20 per hour with refreshments and parking provided.

Terrington Hall is a popular co-educational day and boarding Prep school in North Yorkshire, 12 miles north of York. Terrington Hall is a vibrant stand-alone Prep School with 200 pupils from 3-13, the vast majority of whom go on to the leading senior independent schools at 13.

Terrington Hall School is committed to safeguarding and child protection, and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be subject to appropriate vetting procedures and a satisfactory Enhanced DBS with Barred List check.

Applicants should submit a CV (including details of key achievements and responsibilities), application form and a covering letter. Please email hr@terringtonhall.com
