Job overview

We are looking for a committed and experienced Art Teacher to join our well-established and thriving Art Department as the lead Art Teacher in the Prep School from January 2025. We are able to consider both full-time and part-time (minimum 4 days per week) applicants and will also consider an initial fixed-term appointment with the option to take up the position permanently from September 2025.

The teacher can expect to teach classes from Year 4 to Year 8. The successful candidate will be a skilled practitioner who demonstrates a real passion for the subject and has the ability to convey this to our pupils. You will demonstrate the ability to promote a love of Art for every pupil by delivering engaging and stimulating lessons which set appropriate learning expectations and targets for the improvement of pupils’ learning. You will help to foster a culture of high expectations of Art learning within the Department whilst ensuring appropriate support and differentiation are delivered to meet all student needs. You will be driven and enthusiastic about education and show warmth and humour in character.

Students are introduced to a wide range of mediums and research a variety of artists across all years; there is a focus on refining technical skills at the beginning of all years. Each academic year, students will experience different mediums and approaches, e.g., Term 1: painting and drawing; Term 2: sculpture; Term 3: mixed media.

We aim to develop curious and independent individuals and encourage students to pursue the subject on both a creative and intellectual level. Students attend the Art classrooms regularly in their own time or in art clubs, making full use of the facilities on offer to enhance their work. The Department seeks to promote art outside of the classroom as both an aesthetic and an intellectual discipline: the postholder will be encouraged to run trips to local galleries and to develop the pupils as artists and art historians. It is expected, therefore, that the postholder will encourage, nurture and develop pupils outside of formal lesson time, as well as during timetabled lessons. Currently, the Art Teacher frequently collaborates with other subjects to enhance learning in cross-curricular projects.

If you are an innovative and inspirational teacher with passion and enthusiasm for your subject who is committed to achieving high standards within a successful department, then we would love to hear from you.

Founded in 1993, the Harrodian School is co-educational and set in 25 acres of grounds with excellent facilities. Harrodian offers teachers and students alike a friendly, welcoming and exceptional school environment where classes are small and standards and expectations are high. We place a strong emphasis on the ability to convey enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject to students across the ability range. A sense of fun, a readiness to respond to students’ individual needs and an open approach to teaching are qualities that we value highly. A teacher’s willingness to assist with a large range of extra-curricular activities is important in this dynamic and vibrant school. Teaching staff are expected to offer support to the learning, pastoral and co-curricular needs of our pupils to ensure the all-round quality of education offered at Harrodian.

Benefits

Harrodian offers a range of benefits, including a free car park (on a first-come, first-served basis), a cycle-to-work scheme, free lunches during term time, free annual flu jabs, free access to some of the School’s sport and leisure facilities at stipulated times, and a defined contribution pension scheme.
