Staff wellbeing

We have a very well thought of staff wellbeing offer that focusses on allowing staff to concentrate on their work without unnecessary impediment. In addition to this there is a range of supportive measures such marking from home, wellbeing events and staff celebrations.

Our English Department is at the centre of the curriculum at Barnhill. We have a dynamic and forward-thinking team dedicated to fostering critical thinking, communication and collaboration with an ambitious and inclusive curriculum. A wide range of texts are delivered, creating a dynamic and exhilarating curriculum for our pupils; literature is placed at the heart of teaching and learning in order to engage and inspire our pupils as young readers

A department of 11 teachers, with an innate passion for their subject, which is reflected in their teaching and students’ attitude to learning in lessons. The English department is thriving, where student progress at GCSE and A Level has been well above national averages for many years with disadvantaged students’ outcomes closely matching their peers. Our progress 8 score was 0.54 in 2024 (significantly above average) with A Level progress in the top 25% of schools. We also see high numbers of our students’ progress to Oxbridge and Russell Group Universities, studying English related degrees.
