Job overview

The English College in Prague is seeking to appoint a Teacher of English to join its thriving English Faculty.

The successful candidate will teach English Language & Literature up to KS5/IB. Our faculty is currently enhancing the literature strand of its bespoke Pre-IB course, and there will be opportunities for the successful candidate to lead curriculum development at both KS3 and KS4 with an emphasis on skills-based learning.

English is taught throughout the school and is a popular subject in the IB Diploma Programme, playing a central role in the school’s identity. Proficiency in English is foundational to success across other subjects. Students join the College with varying levels of English proficiency, but all are taught with an aspirational ethos, combining explicit language instruction with literature studies.

We are looking for a teacher who thrives in an academically-focused and aspirational environment, valuing positive relationships both in and out of the classroom. They should be confident in modern approaches to teaching English and eager to cultivate a love for the subject alongside academic rigour and exam success. This role offers the opportunity to work in a prestigious HMC school, providing rich professional development and networking opportunities, as well as a supportive and autonomous teaching environment.

A key requirement is an interest in in-school pedagogical development. Teachers at the English College are encouraged to participate in activities such as lesson-based action research, personal research projects, mutual observations, collaboration with teachers from other schools, mentoring trainee teachers, and piloting innovative ideas to evaluate their success in our context.

You will join a diverse and dedicated team committed to maintaining a dynamic learning environment where individual students' needs and talents are recognised and nurtured.

About the school:

The English College in Prague is an exciting and academically ambitious HMC secondary school, educating both Czech and international students and committed to fostering strong relationships. While we prepare students for IGCSEs in Maths, CAE in English, Common European Framework language exams, and LAMDA exams, our primary focus is on achieving success in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the Czech Maturita qualification. A key component of our curriculum is a two-year bespoke pre-IB programme, which replaces the traditional suite of IGCSEs taken by most schools. This unique and refreshing KS4 curriculum is enjoyed by both students and teachers. Each year, our graduates go on to study at prestigious universities in the UK, continental Europe, and occasionally North America and Asia.

The majority of our teachers are native English speakers, which helps immerse students in the language, supporting their development. Our teaching style mirrors that found in top British independent schools. We offer the successful candidate adventure, challenge, a permanent contract, and competitive remuneration in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. For further information, including details on living and working in the Czech Republic, please visit our website via this link.

For the 2024-2025 academic year, the school will be operating across a split site in a new purpose built school building and our original “annex” classrooms. The buildings are roughly 20 minutes apart and teachers usually teach across both sites during the course of a week. However, from Christmas 2025, we will return to our extensively renovated and expanded main building.

The English College in Prague is a unique and special school. It was founded in 1994 in the wake of the Velvet Revolution as a moderately selective independent day school, offering a British-style Grammar School education and holistic pastoral support to students aged 13-19 (Years 8 - 13 in UK terms). Although all non-language lessons are taught in English it is also a part of the Czech school system. The College is a prominent member of HMC and unlike many international schools is a non-profit-making, fully incorporated charity. Around 70% of its students are Czech and 30% are international students from over twenty different countries.

The College prepares students for a mixture of IGCSE exams, Common European Framework language exams (DELF, Instituto Cervantes and Goethe Institut), as well as ensures that all students in Years 1-4 follow an authorised Czech Curriculum. All students study for the International Baccalaureate in Years 5 and 6 and just over half of the cohort also takes the Czech Maturita examination in addition to the IB. The College has more than twenty-five years’ experience of teaching the IB and many of our staff are IB examiners.

The teaching staff consists of a dynamic mix of recent and more experienced graduates, the vast majority of whom are native English speakers or have been trained in the UK system.  A particular benefit, which is relatively unusual for schools abroad, is that, following a successful probationary period, we offer permanent contracts to our staff. We value relationships between student and teacher and of course how both of these connect with parents. We also actively promote a culture of academic aspiration and individualised expectations.

The College traces its traditions back to the Prague English Grammar School which existed in Prague from the 1920s but suffered closure under both the Nazis and the Communists. It seeks to maintain the traditions and rigour of an English Grammar School within the Czech educational framework and its governors are drawn from both the UK and the Czech Republic, symbolised by its two founding patrons – former President Vaclav Havel and Charles, Prince of Wales.
