Job overview

Permanent 0.8 or Full Time

Outwood Academy Bydales is an 11-16 school located in the beautiful coastal village of Marske-by-the-Sea, close to the North York Moors National Park and with spectacular views of the coastline. We are extremely proud of our tradition of serving the families of the community of Marske and surrounding areas. This was recognised in our recent ungraded Ofsted Inspection which stated “This is a school at the heart of its community”, and “This is a calm and orderly school.” Following this inspection we remain an Outstanding School, and the report rightly celebrated our many strengths.

The department has created a challenging and exciting KS3 curriculum with reading at its heart. To build enthusiasm for English study, the department has developed a thematic curriculum which considers topical issues and an exciting range of texts, both contemporary and canonical. Students are encouraged to be critical thinkers and thoughtful communicators. We are committed to consistently evaluating our curriculum to ensure relevance to our context and provide fresh interest for students and staff alike.

There is a strong whole-school literacy strategy which aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading. This was referenced in our recent inspection report which included the statement that “Reading is a priority for the school”. This includes reading in form time, Accelerated Reader and a variety of reading interventions for readers who are not yet proficient. A specialist literacy teaching assistant uses the Ruth Miskin phonics programme to support emergent readers.

As in all OGAT secondary academies, the department prepares students for Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications. The programme of study is fully resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. We aim to make all our teachers ‘experts’ in preparing students for GCSE examinations, using our thorough and systematic methods devised over many years. We have the benefit of support from the trust’s team of expert English directors, who provide support, materials, advice, coaching and who model and team-teach in lessons alongside us to develop our expertise. At Bydales our outcomes in English are exceptional: in 2023 nearly 90% of students attained at least a grade 4 and close to 80% attained at least a grade 5, with a significantly positive progress score too. These outcomes were maintained into 2024, again with a predicted strong positive progress score.

We are an Outstanding, 11-16 academy based in the picturesque coastal village of Marske-by-the-Sea, close to the stunning North York Moors National Park. We have been part of the Outwood family of schools since 2014.

Since joining the Outwood Family, we have gone from strength to strength and we have seen improvement across all areas of school life. We believe in a collaborative approach, where we all support each other, staff and students, to achieve. During Ofsted’s last inspection, we were proud when the inspectors noted that the school’s ‘leaders are ambitious’ and ‘have high expectations of each other, staff and pupils.’ These expectations are the foundations of a true, supportive and collaborative approach.

We are proud that Outwood Academy Bydales is rated Outstanding by Ofsted and in its latest report, Ofsted noted that ‘staff morale is extremely high’ at the academy and that with help from other members of the Outwood Family, we provide our staff with a varied training programme.

We have also won numerous awards as a school and we have been accredited with the prestigious IQM Award, which highlights that inclusion at all levels is of paramount importance to us.
