Job overview

The Governors of this exceptional Grammar School wish to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher of Physics for January 2025. The post is full-time. The ability to teach GCSE and A-level Physics is essential. A strong degree in Physics is sought, although candidates with a degree in a closely related discipline are welcome to apply. This post would suit a newly or recently qualified teacher, for whom extensive support and encouragement will be given, or a more experienced practitioner.

The Science department at WKGS has 12 fully equipped laboratories, all presented and equipped to a high standard. All students study separate Sciences at Key Stage 3 before electing at GCSE to study either AQA separate Sciences or combined Science, following a two-year Key Stage 4 programme. At advanced level, physics continues to be a popular option and is a highly valued subject by students. Alevel students also follow the AQA specification where they have twelve 50-minute lessons per fortnight, and classes are usually shared between two teachers.

Students achieve excellent results, with 41% of GCSE Physics students achieving a grade 9 – 7 and 67% of students achieving grades 9 – 6. At A-level, 18% of students achieved an A* grade with 50% of Physics students achieving grades A* – A in 2024.

In addition to ensuring an engaging and valuable curriculum in the classroom, the Physics department is highly committed to offering exceptional learning opportunities for students outside of the classroom, including through an ongoing collaboration with the Ogden Trust. There are numerous additional activities offered and the department runs a variety of trips each year, along with organising visiting speakers, in order to enhance and develop each students’ learning experience.

West Kirby Grammar School is a very successful selective girls’ school with a coeducational Sixth Form. There are over 1,200 students on roll, and results are outstanding. In 2023, a Progress 8 score of +0.57 was achieved, and 52% of results were at grades 9–7, with 14% of all grades being at grade 9. At A level, 66% of grades were A*–B, with the average grade achieved being a B.

If you have any questions regarding the post, please contact the school for further information.

Further information and an application form are available to download on the School’s website or by contacting the School on 0151 632 3449.

A completed application form and letter addressing the content of the person specification, which should be no longer than two sides of A4, should be submitted to office@wkgs.net for the attention of Mr S. Clarke, Headteacher.

Closing date: 9am on Friday 4 October 2024.

Anticipated interview date: w/c Monday 7 October 2024.

WKGS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Students are encouraged to explore and develop their talents and interests through a broad and balanced curriculum. Work in lessons is enriched by a wide range of other activities. The school provides an environment that is intellectually stimulating but secure, enabling students to prepare for the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century.

Learning in the classroom is enhanced and supported by field trips, educational visits and a wide range of other opportunities. As a Comenius School we have links with partner schools in other European countries, many established foreign exchanges and visits.

Year 7 and Year 9 enjoy residential outdoor opportunities and many of our senior students appreciate and benefit from the challenges presented by participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

The school is proud of its reputation for success in a wide range of competitive sports. Students are regularly selected to represent their sport at county, regional and national levels.

Pastoral care and guidance are important and Form Teachers play a key role. Heads of Year bridge and help to support the academic and personal development of the students.

The well being of the staff is equally important. Continuing Professional Development is offered to all. Staff are offered holistic therapy and use of the fitness suite as part of a well-being programme. The award of the National Healthy Schools’ Standard recognised the good work and the importance given to healthy living.

The vision for the school as a Science College is to be a centre of excellence on the Wirral and for Science and Mathematics teaching and learning. The school aims to raise overall standards from an already extremely high level in Science and Mathematics and across the whole curriculum at all Key Stages and to contribute to enhanced standards in Science and Mathematics in partner schools.

The school is a very happy one where teachers, support staff and students work well together to achieve the very best. We enjoy what we do and are proud of our achievements.
