A list of texts recommended to support the study of GCSE English Language Paper 1

This resource was written for the first few lessons on Silas Marner, with a Year 7 class. It contains the first few lesson plans and resource material.<br /> <br /> I have taught Silas Marner to Year 7 for many years, and find that students need scaffolding right up until the point where Molly dies, at which point they are so hooked that they are more able to read the text independently and enjoy reading it together in class.

A useful starter both for correcting the mistake, and also for identifying the reason behind the mistake. This resource was created in response to some controlled assessments, but works just as well out of context as a SPAG activity at the beginning of your lesson or as cover work.

This is really an activity about hyphens, which could stand alone without studying Bill Bryson's Notes from a Small Island. The idea is that you have five minutes silence while everybody highlights the hyphens in each example, followed by the more challenging activity of figuring out what the purpose of each hyphen might be (and what effect it creates).

An essay on Arthur Miller's The Crucible that is designed to demonstrate the skill of integrating quotations and close textual analysis within an evaluative response. It would be useful for activities such as underlining subject terminology and discourse markers. It would also provide effective revision of the whole text. If you were to set a different essay on The Crucible (or another Miller text), this model answer may provide a fruitful opportunity for reflecting on effective methods of structuring a coherent argument that could then be applied to other topics.
