This is a complete 20-lesson scheme of work, intended for Year 9s as a GCSE transition unit; however it can also be used as a KS4 SoW for exactly the same purpose. The unit will last roughly between 5 and 7 academic weeks, depending on how many lessons you have per week.
The unit is directly linked to the NEW 1-9 AQA Paper 1 Writing Assessment, 'Explorations in Creative Writing', however it can be easily adapted to suit the needs of most examination boards.
The unit uses the classic film 'Stand by Me' (film not included, sorry!) as a 'springboard' to explore characters, themes, tension, the writer's craft, back-stories and descriptive writing, leading to an AQA emulated writing assessment in 'lesson' 13. Following on from this, the unit develops pupils' script-writing, role-play, performance and review-writing skills. There are also lessons included which explore Todorov's narratives and Propp's characters, to give pupils a deeper understanding and appreciation of narrative structure and technique.
All resources are included within this scheme of work, including homeworks also. I have not included the AQA mark scheme for this unit, however it is easily downloaded from their website. Just a copy of 'Stand by Me' needed!
