What was England like before 1066? This lesson is suitable for GCSE 9-1 history pupils, although it could be adapted for KS3.
Duration: 60 minute lesson.
The lesson includes an attractive PowerPoint presentation, with clear lesson objectives, keywords, and differentiation for all tasks. A detailed lesson plan is included, which breaks down the exact timing and nature of the tasks, although they are straightforward to work out from the presentation itself.
The lesson comes with two handout worksheets, and all answers are provided on the central PowerPoint. The lesson also includes a plenary game which students reliably love! Steal this game for your other lessons - I’ve never seen it fail to go down a treat. Finally, there is an optional homework to complete on quizlet, which recaps the learning.
The lesson content covers:
- The features of England before 1066 (Society, environment, economy etc)
- The nature of power in England and the system earldoms
- The rebellion of Earl Godwin against Edward the Confessor
