A4 planning grid for Edexcel A-level politics 24-mark and 30-mark questions

Please note: this resource is not endorsed or authorised by Edexcel

This planning grid is INVALUABLE to anyone studying or teaching Edexcel A-level politics.

Can be used to practice planning:

  • 30-mark source questions (Papers 1 and 2)
  • 30-mark non-source questions (Papers 1, 2, 3A, and 3B)
  • 24-mark ideologies questions (core and non-core ideologies) (Papers 1 and 2)

It reproduces a standard skeleton structure for 30-mark and 24-mark questions which can be quickly populated with ideas for students who want to practice planning answers quickly and easily.

Planning is an essential part in the A-level politics exams but practicing planning is often overlooked by students. This grid means you don’t have to rewrite the structure every time you want to plan an answer.

The grid is divided into three paragraphs, each with a point and counter-point, encouraging students to focus on AO1 (knowledge and understanding) and AO3 (judgment) which are most important to include in an essay plan.

USAGE: Can be used as a lesson starter or plenary activity (give everyone a planning sheet, write a question on the board and set a timer), as homework, or just for revision.

The following timings are advised to maximise planning efficiency:

  • 4-6 minutes for 30-mark source and non-source questions
  • 2-3 minutes for 24-mark ideologies questions.

Core and non-core ideologies include liberalism, socialism and conservatism, and feminism, nationalism, anarchism, ecologism and multiculturalism, respectively.

This resource is included free when purchasing the practice paper packs for Paper 1, 2, and 3A.
