This is a complete unit of work aimed at Year 7 students, helping them to develop their comprehension, quotation selection and reading analysis skills through the study of the text ‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness.Students also begin to develop their understanding of how writers use symbolism, which includes some historical context information about the Green Man and yew trees as symbols.

The formative assessment is the description of a monster based on visual stimulus in the opening of a story.

The summative assessment is an essay evaluating how Ness uses language and structure to present grief in the novel.
