This is a full lesson looking at each question in depth from the novel Jaws based around the GCSE English Language Paper 1 looking at Peter Benchley’s novel Jaws. 45 slides which includes starter, Boggle word activity, match activity, Jaws video link, plenaries and assessment tasks for each of the questions 1 to 5.
Model answers are given for each question, looking at how students can achieve a grade 9. This lesson is heavily based around analysis and inference in the reading section and includes a grade 9 piece of writing for the Q5 task. The lesson generates discussion, looks at developing inference and connotations, especially looking deeper into the metaphorical links of the king of the sea and the juxtapositions of powerful and powerless, predator versus prey, powerful vs helpless, life and death.

-Match & discuss structural devices to their definition/effect
-Discuss the symbolism and ambiguity of the ocean/sea
-Analyse the beginning section from Jaws for Paper 1
-Identify and discuss the difference between language and structural techniques
-Focus specifically on questions 2 to 4 in terms of developing detail with inference and connotations
-Explode and develop interpretations for Q2 language analysis
-Order snapshots of the film Jaws to consider structural elements
-Construct a flow chart for Q3 structure
-Develop and explain interpretation and impressions in Q4
-Review grade 9 model answers for Q1-4 looking at exploding inference using PEEL
-Create a word bank and plan in preparation for the Q5 writing task
-Read and review 2 grade 9 writing tasks based on the same theme
-Complete the Q5 writing task applying AFORESTRIP and punctuation variety
-Complete A-Z recall activity
