Authentic French Text - Two Extracts from Émile Zola's 'Germinal' for GCSE

This is an authentic text worksheet which helps students to work with more challenging French in the style of the new GCSE, exposing them to vocabulary that they may not have met before. They need to find particular words/phrases in the texts, and answer some comprehension questions by scanning through the text. Ultimately, the students are responding to the material by comparing the two homes which are being described. It links to the cultural importance of a key French literary text about a mining community in northern France which revolts against its poverty by striking in the 1860s.
