This lesson was originally intended for students in year 11 studying the AQA Power and Conflict anthology, who had previously been taught the poems (Bayonet Charge by Ted Hughes and Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred Tennyson) in year 10 and are now re-learning/revising in year 11. However, this lesson could also be used with high-ability students for first exposure to both poems.
Benefits to teacher:
- Model paragraphs for bands 1 to 6 of the AQA GCSE mark scheme so that students can reflect upon the difference between each band.
- A pack of key analytical questions for each poem to allow students to independently annotate/revise.
- Essay plan with thematic comparative thesis statements and best evidence chosen.
- Two different top band model paragraphs, differentiated for middle-ability and higher-ability students.
