A full set of engaging lesson resources for teaching the awesomeness of adaptation.

A full lesson plan is included but here are the basics.

10 mins: Begin the adaptations starter activity.
Students use the adaptations of organism’s worksheet to suggest the adaptations displayed by a selection of 6 particularly well adapted organisms. Students have roughly 2 mins per organism to identify and explain these adaptations as well as using these ideas to create their own definition of adaptation as per the lessons outcome grid. Blooms taxonomy is used to differentiate the task. Timer is displayed on board to help students time manage and engage with task.

10 mins: Classroom discussion is created by drawing answers and ideas from students using lollisticks and targeted questioning to deepen understanding. This discussion will be carried out under the back drop of visually appealing HD photos of the organisms to cater for visual learners.
Next activity is introduced. Frankenstanimals. The task for this is explained and displayed on the board using a demo to ensure students are aware of what is expected. Again this task is differentiated into 3 pieces with the highest ability students linking their work to evolution and survival of the fittest. The scaffolding sheet and clarity of instructions however should ensure a large proportion of students reach this task and ensure rapid progress.

20 mins: Students complete the frankenstanimals task whilst I circulate to assess understanding and ensure engagement with the task.

5 mins: Students share some of their ideas with the class to deepen knowledge and allow me to assess understanding. Plenary task is introduced.

5 mins: Students complete plenary 5 minute group discussion plenary task using A3 storm sheets to record their discussion. Timer and questions displayed on board

5 mins: Students feedback to class and are introduced to a homework assignment that is further outlined on google classroom.
