This introduction to Captain Cook focuses on the early life of James Cook. Take your students to Whitby England and along with David discover aspects of the early life and training of James Cook. Pick up the information around Whitby and gain an understanding of why James Cook is regarded as a prominent navigator, explorer and map maker. This unit has been tested with Primary level students and the approach has created interest. The unit can stand alone but it can also be used in other related studies of Captain Cooks, voyages of discovery and The First Fleet studies covered in Secondary levels. The attachment sheets provide an opportunity for students to develop their own summary page/s of the early life of James Cook and his Whitby connection. Photographs, maps and linked text help to create student interest. Let your students join David whose interest grew as he discovered information about James Cook and allowed him to decide that James Cook was “rather cool”.
