This pack contains the entire 10 lesson unit of work for a topic entitled ‘Celebrating Diversity’. These are Religious Education / Philosophy and Ethics resources aimed at KS3 (Years 7, 8 or 9). These resources could also be used at GCSE level. Purchase of this pack includes:

The first lessons involve exploring recent and current racism in the UK and America, studying cases like Stephen Lawrence’s case/the MacPherson report, examining statistics on racism and debating how we should deal with controversial statues, like that of Edward Colston’s.

Next, the resources involve exploring gender equality in the UK and around the world, studying cases like Malala Yousafzai, examining statistics on gender inequality, contemplating the impact of our words/phrases, investigating the rights of women in Afghanistan, and debating how we should deal with misogynistic influencers, like that of Andrew Tate.

The resources then provide students with an introduction into the LGBTQ+ community, by exploring different identities and understanding the difference between ‘sex’, ‘sexuality’ and ‘gender’. Students also investigate the history of the LGBTQ+ community to understand how the communities’ legal rights and social treatment has changed over the last few hundred years; this is achieved through a timeline activity task. In their second lesson, students will explore religious attitudes to the LGBTQ+ community, with reference to all of the world’s major religions. Modern issues, like conversion therapy, will also be studied.

The final three PowerPoints aim to debunk some of the commonly held myths and stereotypes about people with disabilities. One key task included involves exploring the history of how people with disabilities have been treated. Students will then also research the treatment of people with disabilities in the UK today. This will involve exploring several contemporary UK issues; such as the UK abortion laws surrounding fetuses with disabilities/Down’s Syndrome. In the third lesson, students will link their study of disabilities to unconscious biases. They will learn about what unconscious biases are and how these impact the way we treat other people.
