This resource is designed for Year 9 based on the Pearson Edexcel KS3 Scheme of Work. These lessons are designed to specifically prepare students to start studying Edexcel History (9-1). This is the 10th lesson looking at the Chapter on ‘Why did the First World War start in 1914?’. This lesson focuses on the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 and how the murders led to the First World War. The lesson attempts to link with previous lessons and tackle the misconceptions that the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the only factor that led to the start of the First World War. The assassination was one of many factors that led to war in 1914 and should be seen within the context of a conflicted Europe.
