This is a fun long-term activity that can be done in groups of 2 or 3. It allows the students to choose a topic of their own interest to explore the concept of organising items in a way that follows Mendeleev’s model of creating his periodic table.
This activity assumes that you have taught the basics of the history of the periodic table, or at least the idea of organising elements in a logical manner. Any deeper knowledge of atomic structure, metallic/non-metallic behaviour, chemical periodic trends etc is not required.
A suggested mark scheme and student examples are included.
