Closed and Open Syllable Activity Packet

I created this packet for visual & auditory learners, struggling readers…really anyone can benefit from these syllable pattern activities. It helps students grasp the concept of decoding words by identifying the pattern in the word and begin to apply this concept to their reading and spelling. Students get excited and empowered as they see these strategies work in their reading and spelling assignments. When students, as early as pre-school, are taught to look for the syllable patterns in words, instead of memorization of letters, students will engage in reading and spelling with great growth & success.
I always begin syllable pattern lessons introducing Closed and Open Syllables. These two syllable patterns can be found in all of the other 6 syllable patterned words in the English language.
Introduce the open and closed syllables using the two posters provided.
The activities within this product are Closed Syllable Word Puzzles, activities for learning to read Open Syllable words, Word Sorts – non-word & real words for both open & closed syllables, and BINGO.
