Pupils need to solve the murder by adding up a shopping list and seeing who's bank balance matches, round to nearest decimal places and significant figures, work out circumference which is &'linked to intelligence...&'; and round to 1 s.f. to perform quick calculations.
Quite a lengthy starter to make sure they have the basics for the main activity. I allowed them a calculator from question 3 onwards once they had finished the written calculations and moved on to rounding and significant figures.
