This resource is aimed to develop the command of English for EAL students using George Orwell’s biography as a learning context. The complete bundle is scaffolded in such a way that it builds skills and language needed to access a short text about George Orwell’s life, followed by reading comprehension tasks and further language development activities. The complete bundle covers 26% of the total Animal Farm word count. The unit covers the following skills:

  • cardinal and ordinal numbers
  • names of the months accompanied by activities and reading years
  • reading dates
  • pronouns - subject, possessive and genitive case.
  • verb to be in past and present
  • past simple (regular verbs)
  • past simple (irregular verbs)
  • positive, negative and interrogative sentences
  • reading comprehension based on Orwell’s biography
  • reading comprehension questions
  • question words (who/where/when/which/)
  • relative clauses

Each activity is colour coded. The marking indicates whether the task is suitable for EAL level:

  • A (New to English)
  • B (Early Acquisition)
  • C (Developing Competence)

Alongside the EAL levels, each activity also indicates which language skill is practised:
P- Punctuation
V- Vocabulary
W- Writing
Gr- Grammar
Sp- Spelling
