This lesson was originally intended for students in year 11 who had previously been taught the poems The Emigree by Carol Rumens and Kamikaze by Beatrice Garland, in year 10, and are now re-learning/revising them comparatively. However, this lesson could also be used with high-ability students for first exposure to both poems.
Benefit to teacher:
- A pack of key analytical questions for each poem to allow students to independently annotate/revise.
- Questions designed to facilitate students in constructing three comparative, thematic thesis statements and essay plan.
- Group/class writing activity culminating in a full essay for students to use as revision.
- Homework activity.
