This journalism literacy lesson is differentiated three ways and is designed to inspire pupils to write a structured newspaper report about the armistice at the end of the First World War (as if it was going to be published on the evening of 11/11/1918).
It has a learning objective and differentiated success criteria.
It begins by showing children two video clips with scenes of jubilation as people across Europe celebrated the end of the war, and then explains the structure of a news story with an example to discuss before they begin their individual task of creating a news story.
Lower ability children have pre-prepared statements to order and link with connectives, while middle pupils write their own story. Higher achieving pupils include extra facts from a fact sheet using subordinate clauses.
At the end of the lesson, children complete a self-assessment plenary.

I am an Year 6 class teacher who has been rated outstanding in all recent observations, and I am also an NCTJ qualified senior newspaper reporter who has worked on several local and national titles.
