This is a 26-page activity bundle based on the book “Frank’s Red Hat” by Sean E. Avery. This book was shortlisted for the 2023 Picture Book of the Year.

It tells the story of a penguin named Frank who has lot of good ideas. These ideas are sometimes good, sometimes bad but always under-appreciated by the other penguins. One day he designs a red hat which terrifies the other penguins. Frank has to find a community where he is appreciated.

This book is a great text to teach children that it is ok to be different, and wonderful to try new things.

This set of resources has a range of tasks. Some are suitable for younger grades, some older.

The activity bundle includes:

  • a set of ten printable Literature Circle task cards. These contain a range of tasks based on this book. Tasks are designed to contain a high degree of student choice and are high-engagement, meaning that students can work independently during group time.

  • a comprehension guide, designed to be printed and competed independently. Comprehension questions are aimed at a range of levels, and are designed to target a range of comprehension skills. Answers are also included.

  • a writing stimulus (as part of the ten Literature Circle tasks), based on the book. This is a great follow-up activity, whereby students can bring their own experiences and creativity to complete a written task based on the themes in the book. The writing task has two components - a Visual Arts activity followed by a writing task.

  • associated printables based on the text. These include a research task, a creative arts activity, a cause and effect task, and more. These are easily integrated into Literature Circle rotations. There are a arange of tasks for younger and older students, as well as “all ages” tasks.

  • differentiated book reviews (available with all of my CBCA shortlisted resources).

These are part of a series I created based on the CBCA shortlisted books. There will be resources for the Early Childhood, Picture Book of the Year and Younger Readers categories. I introduce all the picture books to students of all ages, so these resources are open-ended enough to be used with any age group. Bundle and save!

I have many other literature-based resources in my store (most of them based on Australian texts) so feel free to check them out.

Happy reading!
