Functional Maths Activity (L1 - L2) - Holiday Planning (and GCSE)

A great resource on the topic of researching and comparing the costs involved in booking a holiday. Learners will compare this costs of travelling to the airport, flights from different airports (both direct and connected flights), hotel costs and currency exchange rates.

I use this activity with both my Functional Skills Level 1 and 2 learners, and with my GCSE class to assist them with the problem solving aspect of the syllabus. The activity can be easily adapted by tutors.

It is ideal for testing learners knowledge and application of skills in the following areas:

Reading data from tables
Completing tables
General arithmetic
Money
Comparing prices
Currently exchange rates

The activity is laid out in the style/format of an extended Functional Exam Question. Learners must read and use the information sheets to assist them with the questions throughout the activity.

The activity also includes Challenge Questions, designed to challenge higher ability learners.
