This outstanding scheme of work is the perfect way to introduce media studies to GCSE/BTEC students. It focuses on key media concepts such as audience, representation, and media language, while seamlessly integrating essential media theories. Although I teach this scheme using the BTEC Tech Award in Creative Media Production 2024 specification, the lessons are designed for GCSE-level students. The adaptable mark sheet emphasizes the audience, a topic that is central to most exam boards.

This scheme of work comes from a media department that has consistently been the highest-performing subject in the school for the past three years, with results that are 30% above the national average. Due to the engaging and effective lessons, 3/4 of KS4 students opt to take media studies. The head of school has been so impressed by our department’s success that media has now been introduced at KS3.

The professionally designed PowerPoint resources feature clear learning objectives (WALT) and success criteria (WILF). They are color-coded with highlights and include interactive elements such as “Stretch and Challenge” prompts, ensuring that students of all abilities remain engaged. Lessons incorporate multimedia resources and key terminology boxes to enhance revision and concept retention, making complex ideas easily accessible and enjoyable. This high-quality resource leads to exceptional student performance and engagement, creating a memorable and effective learning experience.
Designed for 60-minute lessons (though easily extendable), the scheme offers a well-rounded mix of teacher-led activities and active learning tasks, with differentiation strategies in place to stretch higher-ability students and support those needing extra guidance. The lesson structure includes a blend of teacher instruction followed by workshops and hands-on learning. My head teacher has praised the resources, saying he’s “never seen such fantastic resources.”
