This lesson starts by reviewing the concept of metal displacement by students looking at some reactions and writing equations for those that can occur. They then look at a model to represent halogen displacement. The model involves dogs with different levels of aggression to represent the different halogens. Students then carry out displacement reactions to put chlorine, bromine and iodine in order of reactivity by recording their observations on reaction with sodium halides. After the practical students write word and balanced symbol equations for the reactions that occurred as well as further using the model to represent the reactions. Students then use the halogen reactivity series to work out if other reactions will occur and to write equations for those that do. All answers are given throughout.
