This is a 30+ page resource bundle based on the inspirational picture book We Are Australians by Duncan Smith and Nicole Godwin.

We Are Australians by Duncan Smith and Nicole Godwin is a beautifully crafted book that celebrates the rich tapestry of Australia’s diverse cultures and communities. Through lyrical prose and vivid illustrations, the authors explore the concept of citizenship, highlighting the rights and responsibilities that come with being a part of various groups such as family, school, and nation.

This book was selected to be a mentor text to teach the Stage Two NESA Unit (14): Perspective and Context. The resources are designed both to provoke deep thinking about the text, but also to be completely independent. The only prep you need to do is printing or uploading to google classroom or a similar platform.

This bundle of resources consists of:

  • three differentiated comprehension guides. The guides are aimed at the Stage 1, 2, 3 but also allow for differentiation within your class group. The guides focus on a range of skills, such as literal and inferential understanding, text-to-self connections, author purpose, cause and effect and much much more.

  • a set of ten full-colour literacy centre task cards based on the text. These include a range of Creative and Practical Arts integrated tasks, as well as informative, imaginative and persuasive writing prompts. Task cards are given both in PDF and PowerPoint formats.

  • a full-colour informative slideshow, designed to give background information which will add depth and understanding to students’ understanding of the book. The slideshow gives information about the Uluru Statement from the Heart and can be used to provide contextual facts, linked to many different units of work. The slideshow is given both in PDF and PowerPoint formats.

  • a vocabulary booster, appropriate for many age groups, which is completely no-prep. Students are required to use contextual clues from the book to decode the meaning of key words, then to use this in writing of their own.

When used in conjunction with the book, this is weeks of learning, covering reading, writing and speaking and listening.

This book would be suitable for a whole class read-aloud, or as a reading group text for Stage Two or Stage Three students…

I have many other literature-based resources in my store (most of them Australian) so feel free to check them out.

Happy reading!
