They will also find out about the history of wreaths, Advent calendars and Christmas cards.
This unit contains a bumper pack of 121 PowerPoint slides altogether, 11 pages of lesson plans and 14 resource sheets.
Resources included:
- x7 lesson plans
- x7 PowerPoints for each lesson
- Bauble template
- Chicken template
- Viewfinder and Art
- Snowglobe ideas template
- Trees throughout the seasons
- Holly template
Lesson 1: Create a winter landscape bauble using tints of colour. Learn about colour mixing and the difference between tints and shades. Layer shades of a colour to create a gradient background. Create a collaged character to stick on top of the fading background.
Lesson 2: Be inspired by the patterned hens in Keith Baker’s book Big Fat Hen to create a patterned bird in line with the song ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ - three French hens. Use oil pastels or chalk pastels to create layered patterns and texture.
Lesson 3: Create a snowglobe around the values and magic of Christmas to represent how we feel. This will be inspired by John Lewis’ Man on the Moon advert from 2015. Use a range of brushstrokes and stippling to create detail on the snowglobe.
Lesson 4: Create a calendar featuring the four seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Sketch the trees and be inspired by pictures, using a range of materials to create the different coloured leaves.
Lesson 5: Find out about the history of sending Christmas cards and create their own ‘modern day’ Christmas card of a Christmas tree using simple strips of paper.
Lesson 6: Find out about the history of wreaths (even before they were used for Christmas!) and create their own hand-print wreath to decorate the classroom.
Lesson 7: Create a simple origami advent calendar, writing messages of love, kindness, inspiration or even jokes to take home. You may want to do this lesson first or last, depending if you want it ready for this year or next!
They will demonstrate the art of painting and colour mixing (snow globes and seasons calendar), sketching and creating patterns using oil pastels/chalk pastels (Christmas birds), sculpture and cutting (Christmas wreath and Christmas cards). See the preview files for images of examples of the artwork children will create in this unit.
