This PowerPoint introduces the use of powers of ten to write very large numbers in a shorter form. It uses the light year as example, and after the explanation of how scientific notation is achieved there are two sets of questions for students to complete conversions. Firstly, a simple convert these numbers to /from scientific notation then worded questions on solar system distances, both are reproduced on worksheet 1, and answers appear on the PowerPoint. The four operations Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide are then explained, this is followed by two more sets of questions, reproduced on worksheet 2, the first has practice calculations, the second is a table of values to complete regarding distances to the stars in the constellation of Orion, answers again appear on the PowerPoint.
