This lesson hinges on the idea of analysis of a stage instruction "desolate /deserted place", which though important to a reader, was an instruction unknown to a Shakespearean audience, because they were watching a bare stage. The intrigue comes from thunder and lightning, effects which were made on the Jacobean stage and had a great impact as the lesson does suggest.
