Marianne von Werefkin in her quotes - the Russian-born woman-artist on painting art & her life in Germany and Italy - free resource for students, pupils, art-lovers and teachers in German art history
.
Marianne von Werefkin’s artist quotes express all sides of her feelings; she adores and she despises life. The world of facts bores her, because she is longing for infinity and eternity. Art should therefore express these great dimensions.
Marian Werefkin was born in Russia and left the country with the Russian painter Jawlensky. They got both involved in the German artist group Blaue Reiter / Blue Rider in Munich - it was an important group expressionist artist in Germany. Werefkin was four years Jawlensky’s muse, but moreover she had great theoretical influence in the ‘Blue Rider’ discussions. She created a very expressive and colorful painting art in and around Munich. In 1914 she fled with Jawlensky to Switzerland because of the start of World War 1. After 1918 they parted; Werefkin left for Ascona, Italy and painted there till her death.
