Mark Tobey’s artist quotes describe the need of experimentation for modern abstract art and for the artist himself. Tobey refers to the important lessons of his teacher in Chinese painting. He always sought a unified world in his art-works.

Tobey became famous as artist for his so-called ‘white writing’ paintings - a very subtle kind of American Abstract-Expressionism, and apparently meant in a spiritual way. As young American painter already Tobey got involved in the so-called ‘mystical painters of the Northwest’ in the United States. He was engaged in the Baha’i religion. In his view art had the meaning to be a truthful spiritual expression
