These ten frames are a pictorial representation. That helps children develop the skill of subitizing. Subitizing is when a child can instantly recognise ‘how many’ something is without having to count. Ten frames are two-by-five rectangular frames that form a base for which objects like counters, cubes and objects can be placed to represent a particular number.
The ten frames helps create a solid foundation of understanding numbers. Both KS1 and KS2 children with a good foundation will begin to really explore numbers and number bonds to 10.
This template comes in both vertical and horizontal formats. It also comes in a A4 page but can be enlarged and be printed on A3.
These templates can be added to create larger numbers such as 30 (10+20) or 40 (20+20).
