This lessons helps students engage with such an important question - what makes us safe? We're constantly surrounded by news of crises (war, climate change, poverty) and this lesson supports students, in really accessible ways, to think critically about how we might address some of these threats. I really like the mix of activities, the pie charts, discussion and task of creating your own budget, via spending 100 coins. Something like the budget can sound very boring and distant, but decisions about public spending reflect the values of a society and affect all of us. This lesson helps students engage with this and explore the often ignored/taken for granted idea of 'defence spending'. Great follow up ideas for further exploration too.
