Images of landscape abound in poetry. They make the reader feel connected to a place and to the natural ways of the world. William Wordsworth's poem , 'Resolution and Independence' repeatedly uses the theme of nature and man's interactions with the natural world. As such it was a great poem to study when undertaking an English Unit on Climate Change and the Natural World.
In this 11 page document you will find extracts from the poem that lead students through the narrative and introduce them to Wordsworth's themes.
There are 16 questions - covering aspects of poetry and ideas generated by the poem.
Information is given throughout which allows structure to the extracts and conveys further analysis. There is factual information about the job of leech gatherer!
This unit of work was written for a Year 8 mixed ability class that was studying a thematic unit of Climate change and Nature in poetry. As only extracts of the poem are used students were able to successfully read the poem as a class and answer the questions. Discussion after each stanza extract was helpful for lower ability students.
This handout could be used very successfully with advanced classed from year 8 , mixed ability years 9 and 10. The themes and issues that the poem deals with and very relevant today.
