Multiplication, Factors, Visualising
Key Stage: 1 ★★

Which numbers can be drawn as squares? Which numbers can be drawn as rectangles? Which numbers can only form sticks?

The idea of this problem is to give pupils a tool for visualising numbers. It is not intended to teach the vocabulary of square numbers, multiples and primes necessarily.

This resource has comprehensive teachers' notes and resources, linked from the problem page. This includes possible approaches and key questions, as well as possible support and extensions.

An lovely resource from nrich allowing KS1 or early KS2 classes to explore the ideas of square numbers, multiples and prime numbers by making squares, rectangles or sticks out of a number of cubes or tiles. The task is explained on the website, but the PowerPoint is an excellent starting point to share the problem with a class before they continue exploring other numbers for themselves.
