In Germany children are often taught to record numbers by tallying or using ‘dice spots’ before they learn to write numbers. I have used this method with my Reception class and found it gave greater confidence in recording numbers. I made these sheets for the number table when we were doing the story Owl Babies. They ask the children to count and match or record or to draw a given number of owls.

My lass have been learning to recognise spots on a die and this resource is excellent as reinforcement.
