This is a reading journal based around the text The Pirates Who Lived Next Door by Jonny Duddle. It was designed to support teachers in year 2 to collect the evidence needed for the Y2 SAT’s however, it would be very suitable for year 3.
Based around the Worcestershire reading journal extracts, this booklet focuses on the following areas of reading:
- Make a plausible prediction about what might happen based on observation and inference.
- To infer based on evidence drawn from the text.
- To infer by putting ourselves in the character’s shoes.
- To use evidence to support our ideas by looking at the language the author has used.
- To use speech and thought bubbles to show what the characters may be thinking and feeling.
- Use a story mountain to internalise and retell the story.
- Use a double bubble to compare this text to similar texts.
- Complete a running record to evidence a child can read 90 words per minute.
At the end of the booklet, you will find a handy assessment sheet with the Y2 reading statements for working towards the expected standard, working at the expected standard, and working at greater depth. I created this for my own year 2 class to work alongside our writing sessions based around this text. The booklet provided valuable evidence to support the Y2 moderation process.
